Biography

Saman has worked in darkroom-based photographic processes over the last 15 years with an emphasis on exploiting the properties of materials to express both narrative and abstraction.  The images are intuitively taken from life around him.  His processes require months, and sometimes years, of working with various printed renditions of an exposed negative until renders the image in its final form.

Saman is based in the New York City area. In November 2021, his series “Compositions” is featured at SoHoPhoto in Manhattan. In 2021, his video installation was featured as part of SpreadLightNYC in Tribeca, New York City. He has exhibited in a solo shows at Soho Photo Gallery in New York City in October 2018 and August 2020.  Other shows include group shows at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art in 2017, American University Museum in 2015, Photoworks, Bethesda Maryland in 2014 and 2013.  Jurors for his shows have included photographer Debbie Flemming Caffrey, National Portrait Gallery Assistant Curator of Photography Frank Goodyear and American University Katzen Art Center Director Jack Rasmussen.  His mentor and teacher is the renowned printer and chemigram artist Chuck Kelton. 

Prior to photography, Saman made short films and documentaries about music and musicians and adapted short stories into his one-person stage show.
